VOX: What I learned from taking a train across the US

Here’s how US train travel went from excellent to mediocre.

Several factors contribute to the decline in train usage among US citizens compared to the past. One of the main reasons is the significant expansion of the highway system and the widespread availability of affordable cars. As personal vehicles became more accessible, convenient, and faster, people gradually shifted away from train travel, opting for the flexibility and independence that driving offers. Additionally, the rise of low-cost domestic flights further diminished the appeal of train travel for long-distance trips, as air travel became a more time-efficient option. Moreover, the United States has historically invested less in its passenger rail infrastructure compared to countries with robust train systems, leading to issues with outdated tracks, slower speeds, and limited coverage in certain regions. These shortcomings have resulted in a perception of trains as a less efficient and less viable mode of transportation for many Americans. However, there is a growing interest in sustainable and eco-friendly travel options, which may present an opportunity for a revival of train travel if investments are made in modernizing and expanding the rail network.

Mary Spender: Why My Album Won’t Be On Spotify

Artists often voice concerns about Spotify’s payment structure, feeling that the platform does not adequately compensate them for their music. One of the main reasons for this sentiment is the low royalty rates that artists receive per stream. While Spotify pays a fraction of a cent for each play, this amount can be meager, especially for independent or lesser-known artists with smaller fan bases. Additionally, the massive volume of music available on the platform creates fierce competition, making it challenging for artists to stand out and accumulate significant streams. Critics argue that this model disproportionately benefits major labels and popular artists, widening the income gap within the music industry. Furthermore, the lack of transparency regarding how the streaming revenue is distributed adds to artists’ frustration, leaving them questioning the fairness of the system. Despite Spotify’s enormous user base and revenue, some artists believe that the platform should do more to ensure a more equitable distribution of payments, providing emerging talents with a viable income source and fostering a sustainable ecosystem for musicians of all levels.

Correction: I misspoke at the 3.45 mark – $0.003 isn’t .003 cents, but .003 dollars, or .3 of a cent. Likewise, $0.12 was meant to be 12 cents, not 0.12. Apologies – I’m a musician, not a mathematician.

Can The Steam Deck Run Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart?

Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart brings one of PlayStation’s best franchises to the PC. Of course it’ll be great to see this run on a powerful PC at 4K with Ray Tracing. But we’re here to see how the Steam Deck handles Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart

The Steam Deck, being a handheld gaming device that aims to provide a PC gaming experience, faces several challenges in achieving optimal performance for PC games. One of the main hurdles is hardware limitations. While the Steam Deck boasts impressive specifications, such as a custom AMD APU, it still falls short of the raw power and capabilities of high-end gaming PCs. This means that some demanding AAA titles might require graphical compromises or lower framerates to run smoothly on the device. Additionally, managing thermal performance in a handheld form factor is challenging, as intense gaming sessions can generate significant heat, potentially impacting overall performance over extended periods. Another obstacle is game optimization; PC games are not always designed with handheld devices in mind, leading to potential compatibility issues or inefficient resource utilization. Furthermore, the wide variety of hardware configurations on PC presents a challenge for game developers to ensure consistent performance across all devices. Despite these challenges, the Steam Deck’s promising hardware and Valve’s dedication to fine-tuning the user experience could lead to significant strides in handheld PC gaming, making it an exciting prospect for gamers seeking a portable gaming solution.
